'My Trip to Singapore with Patrick: Day 1' - A novella (!) by Leonard Yeo

We decided to run into our friend Siu Lyn in Singapore whilst she was in transit for a couple of days en route back to Sydney. Of course, we had other intentions in mind…especially for a beer at the Marriott hotel. Believe me, it’s good. Really GOOD…

So I got the bus tickets to Singapore for Saturday 8 AM that very same week (I think it was a Tuesday). And the next night, I passed Patrick his ticket. And as I did that, he told me about a modeling job that would’ve earned him 1300 buckeroos. That’s not bad. But of course, his agent Andrei wouldn’t answer the call. BASTARD.

Anyway, come Saturday morning at 7:15, I get to Patrick’s house, and I give him a ring. Turns out, he hadn’t woken up yet. He’d tried to spend the entire night awake so that he’d sleep throughout the bus ride, but his body had quit at 4:30 anyway. So he comes down at 7:45…no doubt trying to get his gear packed and dressed and have breakfast all at once.

We nearly missed the bus by a few minutes. On the way down, they screened this movie called Ticks on the bus. Complete B rate movie. Sigh. Here’s Patrick and I saying…Oh god…Who creates this movies anyway? They’ve got spiders, flies and now ticks? We decide it’s a good idea to sleep. Would you believe we watched the whole movie???

We get to the rest stop and I tell Pat to buy some ciggies. Apparently, they cost like S$8:50 in Singapore.

Patrick managed to get some sleep. He was making some baby snores for the rest of the 2 hours we were on the bus to Johor Customs Checkpoint.

We managed to cross the checkpoint talking about carrying bombs in our luggage. Nobody stops us. Wonderful customs.

We reboarded the bus once more…and we get stuck in a monster traffic jam. Singaporeans don’t know how to drive. Get to the bus terminal and Pat and I are really starving…So we take a cab to the nearest Burger King. Well, the nearest shopping mall with an ATM which co-incidentally had burger king. So anyway anyway, he goes for a smoke and I go to the ATM. It turns out, I had something like S$28 inside my bank account. I thought I’d got at least $400 in there.

Luckily, I’d brought some money down…like $30 to take cabs. We both get BBQ Bacon Double Cheese Meals. Pretty damn good.

After lunch, we head to my friend San’s place… We get to her place and she’s blasting something really loud on the stereo, her TV is playing something at no volume, and her computer was on. I find her in the toilet on the phone.

So she’s finally done with her call and she joins us. It turns out, she’s completely forgotten about our staying in her house for the weekend. Haha…Great….

So later that evening, she had to rush off to her dive shop, and well, Pat and I decide to shower up and get out to meet my cousin since I convinced him to get me some money. Sweet.

Pat gets on the ICQ and messages everyone that he’s in Singapore and you can call his mobile. So we go off looking around shopping malls for a coffee place that we can do al fresco. Apparently, they’re not as common as we thought. So we finally walked all the way down to the tail end of Orchard Road.

We took away some ice-blended coffee from the Centrepoint, which didn’t have any al fresco coffee place either. After that, we walked down to Plaza Singapura, where we found a Games Workshop. Pat must love the game. He spent a pretty long time in there looking around. I was just looking at cool lead pieces…Like the Lord of the Nazgul figurine. Nice. Pat finally manages to pry himself from Games Workshop and we go to meet my cousin and his girlfriend at this food court at Scotts shopping centre, that sells a really good beef noodle, which is what Pat and I eat for dinner. After dinner, we head to the Marriott , which conveniently, is next door.

We ordered the beer we’d been pining for the last three years. This beer doesn’t taste like the last one we had there, which was really good. It turns out, they do both bottles and draft beer, and we got a bottle. Stupid mistake.

After that, we decide to get a coffee. We must’ve walked half way down Orchard Road again, and walked back up the other way before finding a seat at the Coffee Bean outside Borders. So during coffee, we decide to meet up with Siu-Lyn, who happens to be staying further down Scotts Road.

We get to the hotel after a15 minute walk. Considering we’d walked something like the rest of the evening, we started to get tired. Along the way, Pat and I make a bet (coffee) that she wasn’t in the hotel. So we go to the lobby, ask for her, and apparently they won’t give out her room number. We guessed she wouldn’t have been in just yet. So we decide to wait. As it turns out, he didn’t tell me that she wasn’t in Singapore yet. Fantastic.

We walked to the bus stop, which is on other end of Scotts Road to take a bus back to San’s place stopping by the 7 eleven to pick up some rolls of film for San.

After a pretty long day, we finally get to bed after some tv. At 3 o’clock , I was woken up by Pat’s gerdooper snores, I move to San’s room to hide.
