Why am i named after an Irish saint???0 commentsMood: Tired Currently listening to: Growing On Me - The Darkness Yup, its my patron Saint's day again. On a weekday no less which has denied me an opportunity to drown the shamrock (aka get drunk as a skunk) at the local Irish pub, which is unfortunate seeing as i could probably have gotten a free drink at the very least because of my name - just about all the use its ever done for me! Oh, that and my family (French side) takes it seriously so i usually get a toast from my parents and a gift from my grandparents... sweet! ;) Still, i've always wondered why my parents named me after St. Patrick? I mean, sure he's a catholic saint but he's Irish, while i'm half French and half Chinese... Although interestingly my grandad was saying that aside from Germanic and Spanish blood there is, apparently, an Irishman in there somewhere (Nooooo!!! ;p), which may well explain my whole brush with Alcoholics Anonymous... ;) Still, its hardly a French name like Francois or Marc (who are both saints as well *ahem*) and they seem to have gotten it right by naming my brother Paul which is at least a little more passable as a French name as compared to mine! That and i wonder if they ever knew that i'd become an aethiest (or raving satanic worshipper as some out there would prefer to believe)? Ah well... Come to think of it, all i really know about him is that he stabbed some king in the foot and got rid of all venomous beasts in Ireland (yes, the snake - which if the English standard is anything to go by isn't even venomous sooo...) and i though i'd do a little research... So what's this Saint Patrick all about? This one's a quick summary from the Catholic Forum: Also known as: Apostle of Ireland; Maewyn Succat; Patricius; Patrizio Memorial 17 March Profile Kidnapped from the British mainland around age 16, and shipped to Ireland as a slave. Sent to the mountains as a shepherd, he spent his time in prayer. After six years of this life, he received had a dream in which he a command to return to Britain; seeing it as a sign, he escaped. Studied in continental monasteries. Priest. Bishop. Sent by Pope Saint Celestine to evangelize England, then Ireland, during which his chariot driver was Saint Odran, and Saint Jarlath was one of his spiritual students. In 33 years he effectively converted Ireland. In the Middle Ages Ireland became known as the Land of Saints, and during the Dark Ages its monasteries were the great repositories of learning in Europe, all a consequence of Patrick's ministry. Name Meaning warlike (Succat - pagan birth name); noble (Patricius - baptismal name) Patronage against ophidiophobia, against snakes, archdiocese of Boston Massachusetts, diocese of Burlington Vermont, engineers, excluded people, fear of snakes, diocese of Fort Worth, Texas, diocese of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Ireland, archdiocese of New York, Nigeria, diocese of Norwich, Connecticut, ophidiophobics, diocese of Portland, Maine, diocese of Sacramento, California, snake bites Great. Named after a man who was an enslaved shepherd (and what's with shepherds and visions anyway? Sheep - worse than women sometimes! ;p), had a saint for a chauffeur, converted a bunch of pagan white guys on an island, and is the patron of everything bad about snakes (poor snakes!) and not to mention the patron saint of Nigeria (because they like the colour green?). Yeee Haaaw! ;p Ok enough about saints... nothing much to say about today. Went to uni for classes and... heck, that's about it! :( Might as well sleep now.
