War: Pornography for the military mind?0 commentsMood: Sleepy. Currently listening to: Flight of the Bumblebee - Dream Theatre Things seem to be picking up these days because i've got a pretty long to-do list in front of me for this week... Didn't do much yesterday aside from going to uni in order to try (unsuccessfully) to get myself up to speed with my Perl programming. I swear, if i'm going to fail anything then this would be it! Can't seem to get a grasp on the damn thing... Other than that i bought two tickets for Thursday's play, A Man For All Seasons, which is being performed by the Actor's Studio. Yeah, its been a while... Oh, and if you're wondering about the two tickets you can stop (wondering that is). I'll be going with my mother... ;p Today was marginally more interesting... Went to the Defence Services Asia 2004 exhibition with my parents under the guise of a 'Corporate Procurement Officer' (so says the badge) of my father's company. Pretty awsome exhibition! Talked to a French Admiral (apparently plays old sea combat sims like Harpoon - anybody remember that one?), a Malaysian Brigadier General (who extolled the virtues of a multi-racial Malaysian armed forces and, oh, would i be so kind as to consider joining?) and a rather dodgy Turkish 'salesman' - remember kids, EVERYONE here is pretty much an arms dealer. Lots of countries were represented (except for the US strangely enough - not many booths at all). Russia had the largest contingent by far (and not to mention the best looking gals!), followed by the huge plethora of European nations (France, Italy, Spain, Germany [i got a Rheinmetall badge! Woot!], etc.) and then China and Malaysia/SEA. Got to check out some pretty nifty equipment since it was a big fair - everything from mobile artillery pieces, personal debugging devices and personal defence weapons to those bright yellow cones used by workmen. Managed to even have a go at the AT training simulator (i got me a tank ma! ;p), as well as handle and play around with a couple of H&K and Kalashnikov family guns. Not to mention some of the new South African arms from Vektor! Man, those are weird... Hrmmm... one strange thing that struck me (aside from the dealers thinking that i was a company rep) was the whole... well... atmosphere of the place. Here you have demonstrations, videos and examples of the deadliest and most advanced weapons from around the world - all describing their effects in (many times gory) detail - and then you have this whole carnival atmosphere with showgirls, demo weapons, bright lights, modernesque booths, CGI shows and smiling salesmen. I don't know but i think marketing and the defence industry make scary partners... :o Anyhow. Yes, it was fun and no, i didn't bring a camera. :( Hmmm... then again its on for a few days more AND i still have the badge! That and i didn't get to see the tank depo with the spanking new Leopard... On another note i did manage to swing by the Selangor Gun Club (hehe, yeah me and guns eh?) in order to check out its membership details. Looks pretty cheap - compared to Australia - at about RM600 to join and RM300/yr given that the gun hire is free and ammo is relatively cheap. Good variety too with trap, skeet and a sizable pistol range (air, revolver, etc.) as well as having some nice surroundings, tennis courts, restaurants and a swimming pool. Sweet! Think i'll be going every Saturday/Sunday if anyone wants to join me... ;) Right. Now its only a question of money... :p Came back from Bangsar Shopping Centre a while ago in order to change the tickets for the play - didn't realise that the Toastmasters Club meeting is at the same time! No dice though - can't seem to change the tickets so, *sigh*, looks like the public speaking thing is on hold yet again... :( Let's see - tommorow i need to sign up for the Kickboxing (once and for all!), call the Toastmasters Club, do some Perl *silent scream*, and maybe go to the defence fair again (with a camera) if i've still got time... Think i'm missing something though... Oh yeah, gotta call Chen Hoe and Joa with an invitation from Zamil to come to his friend's house party on Saturday - sounds like a fun night to me! I'll bring the whisky... ;p Ok, gotta sleep now.
