Looks like the international screens at GSC Midvalley and One Utama (click on links for movie times - synopses here) will be screening a series of EU movies in the following few weeks and some, like Nuovo Cinema Paradiso for example, are well worth watching.

The best of European cinema will be showcased in Malaysia during the European Union Film Festival (EUFF) which takes place this year from 24 November to 8 December in Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

The EUFF is an annual event organised by 16 countries of the European Union in Malaysia and jointly presented with Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) Sdn Bhd. The sixth installation of this film festival is led by the British in conjunction with the UK's presidency of the European Union from 1 July to 31 December 2005 and marks the second time the festival is held at GSC.

From Oscar winners to award nominees in independent film festivals, from romantic dramas to action thrillers, almost all of the featured films have received multiple internationally recognised awards. Among them are the UK's Girl with the Pearl Earring, nominated for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Cinematography and Best Costume in the 2004 Academy Awards; Italy's Nuovo Cinema Paradiso, winner of the 1990 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film; Belgium's 25 degrés en hiver (25 Degrees in Winter) winner of the Berliner Morgenpost Reader's Prize at the 2004 Berlin Festival; Czech Republic's Zelary, nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2004 Academy Awards; Finland's One way ticket to Mombasa, winner of the Golden Gryphon/Best Picture Award of the Youth Jury and the Bronze Gryphon/Best Picture of the Professional Jury in the 2003 Italian Giffoni International Film Festival; and Germany's Kebab Connection, winner of the Audience Awards at the Turkish-German Film Festival in Nuremberg and Festival of German Cinema in Madrid.

In response to last year's positive response from cinema goers, the EU Film Fest 2005 will expand its presence to a third venue, the recently opened International Screen at GSC 1 Utama (New Wing), Petaling Jaya, in addition to the International Screens of GSC Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur and GSC Gurney Plaza, Penang.
